Pokerrito

Being content with sushi, I didn’t pay much attention to the exploding poke trend. However, when a co-worker suggested Pokerrito for lunch, I checked the menu and the excitement started to build. Why hadn’t I tried this place sooner?!

While there are several delicious sounding preconceived Pokerrito creations to choose from, I went with the build your own bowl/burrito/salad, which appeared to be very popular. There are so many options and you get quite a bit of food. As of today, their website is still under construction, but there are some helpful photos of the menu board on Yelp.

Build your own Pokerrito Bowl

I ordered a regular sized bowl with brown rice and 2 scoops of protein (you can get a different type of protein per scoop, the larger size comes with 3 scoops). For my “mix-ins” (which they mix in with your protein, along with the sauce you choose), I had 2 scoops of salmon mixed with cucumber, kale, and sweet onion, along with their umami sauce. My sides were crab meat (artificial, AKA Pollock) and avocado (extra $1 charge but so worth it), and my toppings were jalapenos, sweet corn, edamame, grape tomatoes, and sprouts. At the cash register, I was asked if I wanted extra sauce on top (uh, YEAH) and I had to ask the cashier to add crispy onions on top. The crispy onions are free of charge, but they seem to be attempting to hide it so most people don’t see it, and they certainly don't ask if you want any. All the ingredients tasted very fresh, and the rice was served warm. It’s a bit of a battle to mix everything up once you’re ready to eat, but it will pay off in the end.

It’s a small shop so the seating is limited, but most people get it to go anyway. I've read in some reviews that the staff came across as rude if you took longer than a few seconds to select your combinations (there are so many to choose from!), but I personally didn't have that experience. My only criticisms would be that they should consider cutting the sprouts in half because they were kind of hard to eat (I felt like a rabbit), and STOP HIDING THE CRISPY ONIONS!
