Sushi Yoi (take-out)

No, Sushi Yoi doesn't have the best sushi I've ever had... but when that sushi craving hits after a long week and I want to eat in my sweatpants, it sure does the trick. For us, the best deal is their "All Day Special" where for just under $11 you get to pick three items from a relatively large list. My typical go-to's are the Appetizer Tempura, Salmon Nigiri, and Hokkigai Nigiri; however, during the instance pictured above, I decided to swap the tempura for Agedashi Tofu. My husband's go-to's are the Beef Teriyaki with Rice, Appetizer Tempura, and California Roll. There's also Miso Soup included with the All Day Special, and we added an order of the Spicy Salmon Roll.

Salmon & Hokkigai Nigiri
Above are the salmon & hokkigai nigiri, each counts as one selection out of the three you get for the All Day Special. The hokkigai (surf clams) were a little gritty, and as you can see above there's actually a fish scale on there, so I wasn't too impressed this time. I've eaten from here a lot though and other times they better. I like that there's a large amount of salmon for each piece of nigiri, and while not the freshest fish I've ever had, it was still firm and in no way "fishy."

Agedashi Tofu
It's an unfair ask to have takeout/delivery deep fried foods remain crispy when it has to be packaged up and travel a ways before being eaten. Having said that, yes, the outside of these were no longer crispy, but the batter wasn't quite wet/soggy either. It was still a tasty bite, especially when dipped in the tempura dipping sauce.

Appetizer Tempura
Despite having just said it's unreasonable to expect fried foods to stay crispy when eaten via takeout or delivery, the tempura has consistently kept a crispy bite to it regardless of being stowed away and not eaten immediately. It's certainly not as crispy as eating it in the restaurant, but I remain impressed with its resilience. Here you get two pieces of the prawn tempura, plus a sweet potato and either two yams or sometimes carrot.

Spicy Salmon Roll & California Roll
The Spicy Salmon Roll has a nice kick to it, but is pretty standard overall. Same with the California Roll, which like most places uses fake crab meat (pollock) rather than real crab. Both are a generous portion considering they are selections from the All Day Special.

Beef Teriyaki with Rice
As expected, the amount of rice provided far outweighs the amount of beef; however, there's still a borderline acceptable portion and it's quite tasty. Any less and I probably wouldn't order this anymore; the beef is also very thinly shaved. There's enough sauce to mix in with the rice, so at least it has that going for it, should you wish to eat it all!
Overall, given our proximity to Sushi Yoi and the current prices and portion sizes, we will definitely be returning (both dine-in and take out or delivery). I will say the prices have increased quite a bit since they opened, but so far they've managed to remain a better value than the neighbouring Sushi Garden next door. I truly hope Sushi Yoi can manage their costs, otherwise they may lose their edge over their competition.
